Photographer Richard Sprengeler to speak on Friday, November 13, 5PM

Richard Sprengeler, one of three artists in Structural Illuminations, will discuss Bob Cassilly’s Cementland and share his experiences photographing the aftermath of the 2025 St. Louis tornado.

Sprengeler’s photographs document the layered industrial history of the St. Louis region, from the buildings, infrastructure, and remnants of manufacturing, railroads, brewing, meatpacking, and brickmaking to the changes brought by deindustrialization and renewal. His talk on Cementland and the 2025 St. Louis tornado extends that inquiry into one of the region’s best-known transformations of an industrial landscape.

ABOUT STRUCTURAL ILLUMINATIONS

Structural Illuminations, on view through January 10, brings together three St. Louis artists working in photography, painting, and sculpture, whose practices explore the physical, historical, cultural, and conceptual structures that shape how we understand the world. Through different approaches to image and material, Sprengeler, Christina Shmigel, and Gary Passanise illuminate what lies beneath the surface of familiar places, objects, and ideas.
